Instead, this cast is totally current for a Gen Z generation and is filled with up and coming young actors. The premise of the series is that new drama teacher Miss Jenn Kate Reinders wants to stage a rendition of High School Musical at the real East High where the movies were filmed. And not only do some of the new cast members mirror those roles, but some of them also mirror other characters outside of those roles. For example, the person cast as Taylor Monique Coleman in the show has a decidedly Sharpay "I'll do anything to win" mentality about her.

The last chapter of the original High School Musical trilogy ended 10 years ago last October, and now Disney Channel is reviving the hit franchise with a brand new TV series. More East High shenanigans? Sign us up. It'll be filmed in a docu-style format, which means it may be following in the footsteps of shows like The Office and Modern Family. The show will follow a new crop of East High Wildcats who put on a performance of — you guessed it — High School Musical for their winter theater production. Like with the HSM movies, the teens quickly learn drama happens offstage as much as on it. The male star of the series, Ricky is a "snarky sweetheart," a decent student, and Nini's boyfriend. Unfortunately for Ricky, Nini breaks up with him ouch , so he decides to win her love back in the most extra way possible: auditioning for the school's production of High School Musical , anxiously hoping they'll both be cast as the leads. He's your typical class clown type who fears he actually doesn't have much to offer besides his charm and charisma.
The series is produced by Chorus Boy and Salty Pictures in association with Disney Channel , with Oliver Goldstick serving as showrunner for the first four episodes. He was succeeded by Federle as showrunner for the remainder of the first season. Set at a fictionalized version of East High School , the school at which the original movie was filmed, the series follows a group of teenage theater enthusiasts who participate in a staging of High School Musical: The Musical as their school production.
