Rusul woke to find herself alone. Her new husband had gone. The marriage had lasted just three hours. It wasn't the teenager's first marriage. It wasn't even her second, third or fourth. In fact she's been married too many times for her to count. Rusul's harrowing way of life was triggered by an encounter when she was at work. She would watch as girls not much older than her in tight clothing and bright make-up came in to wait expectantly. Older men would soon come in to pick them up.

I was told that behind closed doors many of these clerics were using and abusing Sharia marriage laws to exploit women for profit. These men were grooming vulnerable girls and young women, trapping them into prostitution and pimping them out, all with seemingly total impunity. For such a story, we needed to secure evidence on camera. We recruited a male undercover reporter who, over the course of our year-long investigation, met and secretly filmed several of the clerics running the Sharia marriage offices in the vicinity of the shrines.

Shia clerics were filmed offering 'pleasure marriages' in which men, usually banned from having sex outside marriage, can pay a dowry for an interim wife. One cleric claimed it would be 'no problem at all' to marry girls as young as nine under Islamic law. The religious rite dates back centuries, partly intended to allow men to have a legitimate relationship while away from their wives. However, some Iraqi men and Shia clerics are now abusing it to give a veneer of legitimacy to child prostitution.
